Then I watched Season 2, and it blew me away.Īndrew Scott plays the hot priest, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't seriously disturbed by how hot this actor who I know better as the incredibly psychopathic, badly deranged Moriarty from Sherlock, is, in playing this priest. Truth be told, I found some of Phoebe Waller Bridge's (the creator of the show and actress who plays Fleabag) early sex scenes and the monologues to the camera quite jarring and weird, but once I adjusted, it became endearing, and I realised this device was a clever tool to capture Fleabag's inner monologue, which could be both petty and pertinent, and oddly reassuring that thinking like this is normal. I enjoyed Season 1, once I got past the first couple of episodes. It is utterly brilliant, and I have watched Season 2 half a dozen times since I first saw it. This is hilarious, crass, heartbreaking, tender, nuanced, thoughtful TV, that shows both the ugly side of human nature, and the finer feelings, and makes us laugh at it all. I don't care who you are or what you like. If you haven't seen Fleabag yet, you must. It can only come from decades of reckoning with who we really are.I am a little late coming to this party, but I am here now and want to share it with the uninitiated, as I was, less than a month ago. True redemption, the show suggests, takes more than good behavior. The point isn’t that Fleabag needs religion. The show’s humor remains raunchy, and the season’s secular patron saint is a tough older woman (the wonderful Kristin Scott Thomas) who credits her comfort in her own skin to the bodily liberation of menopause. Waller-Bridge isn’t proselytizing, exactly. Breaking the fourth wall is Fleabag’s signature since only the priest notices these asides, could she be talking to God?

Coming to Amazon Prime on May 17, Season 2 opens with a bloody-nosed Fleabag promising “a love story.” Set at a dinner where her dad announces his engagement to the smug girlfriend his daughters loathe (another perfect Olivia Colman performance), the masterly premiere finds our heroine reformed.
